FRSC Commander says fallen container was latched to truck bed....READ MORE HERE
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos State Sector Commander, Hyginus Omeje has said that the container that fell off Ojuelegba bridge on Wednesday was fully latched onto the truck bed because it fell alongside the bed.
“If a container falls without the flat bed, then it means it was not latched and necessary action would be taken against its owner but in this case, the container fell with the flat bed, indicating that it was latched.
“There is an ongoing operation code named Operation Scorpion initiated from the Corps where we are on the lookout for unlatched containers,” he said.
There were speculations that the driver of the truck could have been drunk or had dozed off at the time of the accident.
No fewer than three people were killed after the 40-feet container fell off the Ojuelegba Bridge onto the road below, crushing two moving private vehicles.
The vehicles, a white Toyota and a black jeep, were reportedly mangled under the weight of the container.
A crowd of residents and motorists was said to have converged on the scene as there was apprehension on the number of casualties involved in the incident.
The situation caused traffic snarl in the area as traffic officials had a tough time controlling the number of people trooping to the scene and redirecting the traffic.
The driver of the trailer reportedly attempted to escape the scene but was apprehended by the angry mob.
